Medium Tank (1939-40) USA - 112 built. The M2 pre-series. The future M2 design was related to the T5 prototype, designed at the famous Rock Island Arsenal, the federal government's main weapons manufacturer and U.S. army foundry. Work started in 1938, as a new model based on the M2 light tank.

The result of all these changes was a modernized tank, indexed Medium Tank M2A1. It had a 400 hp Continental R-975E-C2 engine, which was a licensed copy of the Wright R-975. The mass grew to 18.7 tons, and the suspension had to be modernized.

The light tank M2A1 can be differentiated from the combat car M1 by the vehicles' turrets: the light tank's was cylindrical in cross-section with an extension for the weapons, while the turret of the combat car was either D-shaped or octagonal. The light tank also had a cupola on the left rear of the turret roof.
